Royal Enfield

Established in 1901 Royan Enfield is the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. It was originally a British company however it was partnered with India in 1955 and by 1962 the entire motorcycle was being manufactured in India and the company became Indian.

Since then, it has been a premier manufacturer of motorcycles in India and abroad and has subsidiaries in the US, UK, Thailand, and Brazil. The company has its headquarters and all three in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and to date, they have manufactured 846,000 units and had a revenue of $1.1 billion in 2018.

When you normally hear of Rum your mind goes to Cuba, but India also has a world-famous brand of Rum called Old Monk. The company was originally started in 1855 by a Britisher named Edward Abraham Dyer in Himachal Pradesh but has since been acquired by Mohan Meakin Pvt. Ltd.

Old Monk is especially known for its vatted dark rum which contains 42.8% alcohol, is aged for 7 years, and has a dark maroon color. Besides this, the company also sells other variants of rum with varying prices and outside India, it has retailers in 21 different countries.

Reliance Retail

Reliance Retail is India’s biggest retailer with over 18000 locations across the country. It was founded by Mukesh Ambani in 2006 and is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. Just like other subsidiaries of Reliance Industries, Reliance Retail is also massively successful and is valued at $100 billion.

It sells everything from food and groceries to toys, clothing, and home equipment, and even farm equipment. It also has its own cola brand called Campa Cola and has partnered up with 7-Elevan to open even more stores. Besides its physical stores, it also has an e-commerce store as well.

Lakmé

Lakmé is an Indian cosmetic brand that was founded in 1952 by the Tata Group. It was later acquired by Hindustan Unilever in 1998 which is a subsidiary of Unilever the British Company. Lakmé’s name comes from the French opera, which itself is a derivative of Lakshmi the Hindu Goddess.

It is said that the company was founded because Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was concerned with Indian women’s spending habits on foreign cosmetics and he asked JRD Tata to manufacture these cosmetics locally. Since then, it has become one of the biggest cosmetic brands and has 485 salons and an e-commerce platform.

Amul

Amul is one of the biggest dairy brands in India and was founded in 1946 by Indian farmers as a cooperative to counter the exploitation of small milk farmers by traders. Since then, it has grown into one of the biggest milk producers in India with $6.5 billion in revenue in 2022.

The cooperative has over 1000 employees and over 3.6 million milk producers and makes all kinds of dairy products like butter, cheese, yogurts, local sweets, ice cream, chocolates, creams, spreads, and even drinks. It is the only Indian dairy company to be included in the list of top 20 global dairy companies.

LIC

LIC stands for Life Insurance Corporation is a multinational public investment company. It is the biggest insurance company in India and also its largest investment institution with assets of over $620 billion. The company was founded in 1956 with the merger of various private insurance companies and then its nationalization, meaning it is owned by the Indian government.

But its initial public offering occurred in 2021 and since then the stake of the government has been dropped down to 96.5 percent. The company has over 95,700 employees and a revenue of $98 billion in 2023. It has a diversified investment portfolio covering almost every business sector.

Louis Philippe

Louis Philippe is one of the most famous men’s clothing brands in India. It is named after the French King Louis Philippe and was founded in 1989. It is a subsidiary of Madura Fashion and Lifestyle and a division of Aditya Birla Group, one of the largest conglomerates in India.

It has over 700 stores in India and over 2000 brand outlets in India and internationally. In 2023 the company had a revenue of over $150 million and its brand ambassador is the Twilight star and current Batman Robert Pattinson.

Airtel

Airtel is a multinational telecommunication company of Indian origin. The company was founded by the Indian billionaire Sunil Mittal in 1995 who is also the chairman of the company and through ownership of Bharti Enterprises has a 39.94% stake in the company.

Airtel is the largest communication provider not just in India but the entire world. It operates both in South Asia and Africa covering 18 countries and provides 5G, 4G, and LTE services. While successful the company has had its share of controversies with the main one being its subscribers’ privacy getting compromised.

Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar was originally a British luxury vehicle brand but along with Land Rover was acquired by the Tata Group of India in 2008 and merged to form Jaguar Land Rover. The company is now a subsidiary of Tata Motors and had a revenue of £22.80 billion in 2023.

It also provides cars to the British Royal family and the British government and has manufacturing plants in the UK, India, Slovakia, China, and Brazil. The company sells a variety of different cars under its Jaguar and Land Rover brands and is heavily investing in electric vehicles.

Larsen & Toubro

Larsen & Toubro is a multinational Indian conglomerate that was established by two Danish engineers in 1938. It has its headquarters in Mumbai and has 93 subsidiaries and a number of joint ventures both in India and abroad.

Its subsidiary companies operate in real estate, construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, energy production, education, technology services, and financial sectors. It had a revenue of $23 billion in 2023 and employs over 45000 people permanently and over 200,000 on a contract basis.
